Earth Day 2008: Tip 1

Reduce-Reuse-Recycle PAPER style!

Get off "junk mail" lists!

  • Contact the Direct Marketing Association Mail Preference Service to get off their mailing list. They have an online form, and the website has tips on how to get off of other lists (calling, email) too.
  • Get rid of "pre-approved" credit offers by calling (888) 5OPTOUT.
  • Just say no to phonebooks.
  • Eliminate unwanted catalogs you receive by visiting the Catalog Choice Web site. Click on Get Started to begin.
  • Call those “800” numbers provided on catalogs and other bulk mailings to request your name to be removed from mailing lists. This can be very effective.
  • Avoid giving your name, address, phone number and e-mail address to businesses if possible. They may use the information to put you on another mailing list and will oftentimes sell it to other bulk mailers.
Reuse paper--
  • Use partial pieces of paper or the backs as scratch paper.
  • paper bags
    • Store seasonal items in the bags
    • Use them as trash bags
    • Make them in to toys
    • Color on them
    • Wrap gifts

Recycle-- That's pretty self-explanatory, but check out your local recycling policy and then recycle your paper and cardboard!

A few ideas to get you rolling. What do you do?

Think BIG, but start small. Small changes will lead to big changes.
